In today’s Collection Spotlight, we’re looking at some artifacts from the Acton State Bank. This bank was located on Exchange Street, next to the U.S. Post Office. It was robbed in 1924; the robbers, who were never caught, got away with $3,000 (the equivalent of $41,000 in 2014 dollars).
The bank closed in 1934. The building has housed several businesses since then, but is currently the site of Old McDonalds Cafe.
Then, as now, banks gave away a lot of promotional items — but while today those freebies typically consist of ballpoint pens and keychains, back in the 1920s they included more valuable items such as coin banks, almanacs, calendars, and leatherbound deposit books.
