The Historical Society's first Quilt Show, held April 17 at Acton United Methodist Church, was a great success. Families and individuals proudly displayed their quilts, resulting in a total of 61 unique entries. Some were antique, some modern, some hand-stitched, some machine-sewn, but all stunning in their craftsmanship.
Many of the quilts on display were treasured family heirlooms, some of which date back as far as the Civil War. Some quilts were new, made recently by their owners. Others had a more mysterious origin, such as those bought at rummage sales or auctions.
While many quilts were praised for their beautiful colors and design, others were admired for their individuality. Two of the quilts on display had family photographs screened onto the fabric and worked into the design, creating a unique and special heirloom. An entry contributed by the Historical Society was the President's Quilt, a fascinating piece featuring portraits of every U.S. President from George Washington to Ronald Reagan.
Three People's Choice Awards were given. In the category of Traditional Quilt, the winner was Mary Spencer for her "Starry Night" quilt. In the Contemporary category, Sheri Lathrop's "Amish Quilt" took the prize. Margaret Barker's delicate "Yo-Yo Quilt" was honored in the Miniature category.
Plans are in the works for another quilt show next year, so be sure to check back for more details. Until then, dust off those old boxes in the attic and pull your quilts out of hiding. You may have next year's winner!
